How to Print Graph Paper at Exactly the Right Size

If ten squares of a 5 mm grid do not measure 50 mm, your printer scaled the page. Here is every setting that causes it.

A grid is only useful if it measures what it claims. Most printable graph paper on the web comes out slightly small, and the cause is almost never the file — it is the print dialog quietly resizing the page.

The one-minute check

Print a sheet of 5 mm graph paper, then measure across ten squares with a ruler.

  • 50 mm: correct.
  • 47 mm: the page was scaled to about 94%, the classic A4-to-Letter shrink.
  • Anything else: custom scaling is switched on somewhere.

Measure ten squares rather than one. A 0.3 mm error per square is invisible on its own and obvious across ten.

What causes the shrink

Fit to printable area. Printers cannot print to the very edge, so dialogs offer to shrink the page to fit the printable region. That rescales everything by 3–6%.

Paper size mismatch. An A4 sheet (210 × 297 mm) printed on US Letter (216 × 279 mm) is too tall, so the driver scales it to about 94%. The reverse, Letter on A4, usually prints at full size with wider margins.

Browser zoom. If you print from a web page rather than a PDF, the browser's zoom level is applied to the output. A PDF avoids this entirely, which is why our sheets download as PDFs.

The settings, by program

Chrome and Edge: More settings → Scale: Default, or Custom set to 100. Make sure Paper size matches the sheet.

Firefox: Scale: 100%, not "Fit to page width".

Adobe Acrobat Reader: Page Sizing & Handling → Actual size. Untick "Choose paper source by PDF page size" if your printer ignores the selected tray.

macOS Preview: Scale: 100%, not "Scale to fit".

Windows Photos or Paint: do not use these for grids. They always fit to the page. Open the PDF in a PDF reader instead.

The margin trap

Some printers cannot print within 5 mm of the edge and will silently shift content inward rather than scale it. If your grid is the right size but sits off-centre, increase the margin in the generator to 10–15 mm and reprint.

Why PDFs beat images for this

A PDF stores the page in points — 72 to the inch — as real geometry, so a 5 mm line is 14.17 points wherever it goes. A PNG stores pixels, and pixels only become a physical size once something decides on a DPI, which different programs guess differently. For anything that must measure correctly, use the PDF.

If you need the pixel equivalent for screen work, our image resolution converter turns DPI into pixels per centimetre.

Paper worth printing on

For pencil work, ordinary 80 gsm copy paper is fine. For ink or fineliners, 100–120 gsm stops bleed-through, and for watercolour-pen sketching, 160 gsm or more. The GSM converter translates those into US pound ratings if your paper is labelled that way.
