About these units

The gray (Gy) is an SI base or derived unit of radiation dose, equal to 1 sieverts.

The rad (rad) is a specialist or regional unit of radiation dose, equal to 0.01 sieverts.

Going the other way, 1 rad = 0.01 grays. Absorbed dose is measured in grays (or rads); equivalent dose, which accounts for biological effect, is measured in sieverts (or rems). For X-rays, gamma and beta radiation the weighting factor is 1, so one gray equals one sievert — the assumption used in this converter.
