Kg to Lbs: Converting Kilograms to Pounds in Your Head

A kilogram is 2.20462 pounds. Double it and add ten percent — you will land within a quarter of a percent every time.

19 January 2026 · 5 min read · Weight

One kilogram equals 2.20462262 pounds. Like the inch, the pound is defined exactly in metric terms: one pound is 0.45359237 kilograms, agreed internationally in 1959.

The double-and-add-ten-percent trick

Because 2.2 is so close to the true 2.20462, this works remarkably well:

  1. Double the kilograms.
  2. Add 10% of that result.

For 70 kg: double is 140, ten percent of 140 is 14, total 154 lb. The true answer is 154.32 lb — an error of 0.2%.

Reference table

25 kg 55.12 lb 3 st 13.1 lb
50 kg 110.23 lb 7 st 12.2 lb
70 kg 154.32 lb 11 st 0.3 lb
100 kg 220.46 lb 15 st 10.5 lb

Stones still matter

In the UK and Ireland body weight is usually spoken in stones, where 1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.35029 kg. "Eleven stone four" means 11 × 14 + 4 = 158 lb = 71.7 kg. Our stones to kilograms converter handles the arithmetic.

Three tons, three answers

This is where real money gets lost:

Name Also called In kilograms
Metric ton tonne 1,000 kg
Short ton US ton 907.18 kg
Long ton imperial ton 1,016.05 kg

A shipping quote in "tons" that does not say which one is ambiguous by up to 12%. If a contract matters, insist on tonnes or kilograms.

Troy ounces are not ounces

Gold, silver and platinum are priced per troy ounce (31.1035 g), which is about 10% heavier than the ordinary avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g). A "10 oz" silver bar weighs 311 g, not 283 g. Use the troy ounces to grams converter for bullion.
